Exerpt: Caidrych and Valea

“What do you think being a warrior means, Valea? That it’s all about how well you can swing a sword, or slice with a dagger, or use a spear, or even how accurately you can launch an arrow at your enemy?” he (Caidrych) asked in a way to calm voice, hip propped on the table, facing her.

“YES!” she exclaimed, wondering why he was making this conversation so difficult.

“No, Valea, it’s not,” he stated…

“Being a warrior is not about beating everyone around you, Valea. It is about serving and defending this village, this land, this… way of life from falling to men like Jago. For that to happen, every warrior has to be their best, not spend their time trying to be the best. Confidence will make you stronger, cockiness will get you killed. You may have been the best at your trials, but you’re not the best in Eynfyn. Do not get the two confused. The faster you learn the difference, the better off you’ll be.”
